Using Amazon DMS to Migrate Databases
Amazon DMS is the data migration service of Amazon Web Service and is optimized to migrate databases from on-premises systems to the cloud or between two cloud providers. It is possible to choose between carrying out one-time migration or continuous data replication between the source and the target databases, provided both are kept always in sync. Databases can be migrated with Amazon DMS from relational databases, data warehouses, and NoSQL databases.
There are several reasons why organizations use Amazon
DMS for database migration. Here are a few of them.
·
Migration with Amazon DMS is a
quick and seamless process as the software, once configured, handles the
complete process of managing, deploying, and configuring all the required
infrastructure for migration.
·
The software is flexible and users can
scale as needed in data storage, paying only for the quantum of resources used.
Additional storage required can be downloaded in minutes.
·
An important feature of Amazon DMS is
the failover feature. In the event of an outage or crash of the primary server,
the secondary servers onsite or in remote locations are automatically triggered
and there is no downtime or stoppage of work. After the issue is resolved, the
primary server is updated with the data changes during the break period. There
is thus no loss of data.
·
Migration with Amazon DMS entails
moving databases to more cost-effective and advanced platforms. Users can avail
managed database services like Amazon Relational Database Service or Amazon
Aurora and low-cost storage repositories such as Amazon S3 or fully-managed
data warehouses of Amazon Redshift.
